Refrigerator

Let us help you make your fridge a tool for healthy-eating success! It’s super simple to always have fruits and vegetables on hand. You can keep them in their whole form and eat as is, or add to your favorite recipes. Just clean and slice fruits and vegetables and place in a container in the refrigerator so when those hangry moments happen you have healthy whole foods available instantly. Keep in mind which fruits and vegetables we should buy organic. Download this pdf of the Dirty Dozen & Clean Fifteen. If you can, buy local as a great way to give back to your community.

Pantry

While shopping the perimeter of a grocery store is ideal, you will have to hit the middle aisles for those pantry staples that help to add spice and flavor to your recipes. Thankfully there are a variety of pantry staples that are made with real ingredients. It is very important to be a label reader. Watch out for seed oils, hidden sugar, and heavily processed ingredients. To help the pocketbook always shop in bulk and online when possible. Almond flour, coconut flour, and sweeteners are cheaper when purchased in large quantities. We love to shop local, but sometimes they don’t carry certain things that we love. Our favorite online shop is THRIVE MARKET.

Tools and Storage

Avoid plastic whenever possible when it comes to food and beverage. Hard plastics can contain BPA, which is a developmental, neural, and reproductive toxin. Use caution with aluminum cookware. Aluminum has been linked to brain disorders as well as behavioral abnormalities and is considered toxic. So now you’re wondering what in the world to use? Our top picks are glass, high-quality 304-grade stainless steel, cast iron, and ceramic cookware. Start slow, and before you know you will have a large collection of non-toxic tools to help simplify your time in the kitchen.

Swap in pantry staples for grain-free, refined-sugar free lifestyle without compromising on flavor

Swapping your pantry from processed foods can be confusing and a bit scary, but that is why we are here to help you! The reason we do this is that eating refined carbs is linked to an extremely increased risk of chronic diseases, including cancer, obesity, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. Refined or simple carbohydrates include sugars and refined grains that have been stripped of bran, fiber, and nutrients. If we can replace these refined carbohydrate foods with whole, nutrient-dense anti-inflammatory foods, we will help prevent chronic disease instead of causing it. Here are a few of our favorites to help make your pantry makeover easier.

Almond Flour
Almond flour yields tender treats — learn how and when to use it in your baking by following our recipes. Most of our recipes call for blanched almond flour. There is a difference when using unblanched almond flour so make sure to use what the recipe calls for. Almonds are high in fat which helps make baked treats moist and tender. Remember, there is no standard conversion when using almond flour as a substitute for all-purpose flour.

Swerve Sweeteners

Xanthan Gum
Xanthan gum is a flavorless thickener used widely in a gluten-free, grain-free lifestyle. In addition to thickening, xanthan gum helps keep solid particles in suspension, which is useful in products in our homemade salad dressing. I love to use it to thicken sauces, soups, and non-dairy ice creams. It is used in our gluten-free recipes as a replacement for the sticky effect of gluten and as a binding agent.

Coconut Flour
Coconut flour is a great alternative in a gluten-free, grain-free, low-carb lifestyle. It is extremely high in fiber, which means it absorbs a lot of liquid during baking. This makes it critical to follow our recipes exactly as each tablespoon can alter a recipe greatly! When baking with coconut flour I like to let the batter or dough sit until the coconut flour has time to absorb all the liquids.
